Growing up and trying to find a sense of belonging is sometimes a challenge. Tanya, an elementary student has to also navigate a new school and neighborhood because she’s relocating with her mom. Tanya doesn’t know what to expect and she is extremely nervous about whether she will be liked. Tanya’s first day starts off because of her “HAIR”, but a very special teacher helps her along and reminded her that she’s a beautiful black girl.
Shakira Heyward is a native of the Bronx, New York. Born to her parents Dana Fuller and the late great Bishop C.L Heyward who has left behind Shakira’s greatest gift her mother LaTonya Heyward.
Shakira Heyward completed her undergraduate studies and received a Bachelors in Psychology at the College of New Rochelle, NY. She is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in Social Work at Silberman’s School of Social Work at Hunter College and will be graduating May 2020.
Shakira works in a high school as the Dean of Students in the heart of the South Bronx. She has been a witness to children not always feeling like they fit in because of unique cultural and socio economic issues. Her natural tresses are always the topic of conversation and inspired her to write to her favorite group of people, young children. Shakira’s intrinsic passion is to educate, encourage and empower children of all ages. Her approach to this sometimes sensitive topic is both gentle and insightful. Shakira’s plans are to write more books for children and parents that demonstrate uniqueness and inclusivity.
Y.A.S.S was created to encourage young people all around and connect Young Anointed Saved and Satisfied individuals. Everyday motivational quotes or scriptures are posted on our social media outlets (Instagram and Facebook). On Friday's we highlight a young person that is excited about God and enjoys serving in their local churches. The purpose of this group is to show the world that there are young people that are on fire for God and to be a light for those that are in a season of darkness.
